BRINDLE GSDs

THE GERMAN SHEPHERDS ON THIS PAGE ARE NOT FOR SALE

THE FOLLOWING PICTURES ARE EXAMPLES OF BRINDLE COLORED GERMAN SHEPHERDS

SOME WERE PRODUCED BY LAKESIDE SHEPHERDS AND SOME BY OTHER BREEDERS

Brindle was originally part of the breed from the beginning; one of the most influential German Shepherd Dogs of all time (Beowulf) was a brindle.

Unfortunately, the color was deemed “non standard” and started to fade away some time after the breed founder’s (Captain Max von Stephanitz) passing.

Brindle is a dominant color, meaning it can be reproduced from only one parent and will not be carried recessively.. so it is easy to breed out. Some argue that no gene is truly “extinct” and could pop up again. Brindle most certainly can be “hidden” underneath black, white or any other masking gene. Personally I think it is sad for certain colors and patterns to be selectively bred out. To quote Captain Max von Stephanitz himself: “no good dog is a bad color.”

Beowulf was the damsire to one of the greatest early German Shepherds, 1906 & 1907 SIEGER 𝙍𝙤𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙫𝙤𝙣 𝙎𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙠𝙚𝙣𝙗𝙪𝙧𝙜 SCHH3, who in turn sired one of the greatest males of all time.. 1909 SIEGER 𝙃𝙚𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙡 𝙫𝙤𝙣 𝙐𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙠 HGH. (Hettel in fact is linebred 3-2 to Beowulf; Beowulf also being his damsire) Hettel’s paternal line is behind every single DDR German Shepherd alive today; and his blood lives on in every other line of GSDs as well. Imagine if Beowulf would have been excluded from the gene pool back then, simply because of his color/pattern.
